Stalking Fandom

This is the story of two reasonably intelligent women (Lynn is a psychologist, with a PhD in clinical psychology, gainfully employed as a therapist, professor, and researcher; Kathy is a writing professor with a PhD in Eighteenth Century literature) who fell hard for a show called Supernatural.

We became so fascinated by what it means to be a fan that we decided to combine our skills to write a book on fandom from the fans' perspective. As academics do, we first hit the libraries and internet, accumulating stacks of articles and hundreds of pages of research. We typed and revised and theorized, quoted and footnoted, and ended up with an academic text crammed full of the current scholarship on fandom.

This is that book.

However, somewhere along the line, the research took a back seat to the road trip as we traveled across the US and Canada interviewing the show’s fans, as well as the actors and directors, writers, journalists, bloggers, convention organizers, significant others and insignificant hangers-on. The book split in two. Fangasm! is the story of that year-long roadtrip -- the surprises we never saw coming, the secrets uncovered, the behind-the-scenes insights, the heartwarming and heartbreaking fan confessions. It’s also the story of our shared obsession and the friendship that sustains us through 4 am line-ups, overtaxed credit cards, canceled flights and airport camp-outs, and of course the occasional accusations of insanity. So much has been happening with us on the book-front. Get ready for a massive “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” post soon. . . .

Nothing but good things to report about upcoming and finally released films featuring some of our favorite people. Skills Like This co-written by and starring Gabriel Tigerman, is set for release this coming Friday at the Angelika Theater in New York. Check here for some more background on the film.

My Big Break, featuring Chad Lindburg is making the rounds at college campuses and is scheduled to screen at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association national conference in New Orleans on April 9.

And Ten Inch Hero, starring Jensen Ackles, is finally going to be available on DVD on April 18th. You can pre-order the DVD and a teeshirt here.
